His name is Tim Staffell. If you’ve seen the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, he’s the guy depicted as the lead singer and bass player for the pre-Queen group Smile with Roger Taylor and Brian May.
He’s also the guy who quits the band, saying that it’s never going to go anywhere. It might not have with him, but it sure did with Freddie.
Staffell admits he suffered “extreme envy” when they made it big, but he says, not destructive envy…so there’s that.
He also remained friends with the guys – he’d gone to school with May and Mercury – and that’s paying off now after May invited him into the studio to perform the vocals (and bass) on the Smile song for the soundtrack.
