The TV series revival trend continues; the latest comeback is Murphy Brown, which had its original run from 1988 – 98.
The 13-episode order from CBS order comes on the heels of revivals of Will & Grace at NBC; Roseanne and American Idol at ABC; and The X-Files, Prison Break and 24 at Fox.
So far, they’ve all been pretty successful, but you just know that at some point, one of them is going to fall flat on its face, and Murphy Brown might be the one to do it.
Maybe it’s just my own taste, because it was a huge hit while it was on, but any enjoyment I took from it was always about the ensemble cast, a few of whom had way better comedy chops than Candace Bergen, who is so far the only former cast member confirmed to be returning.
It takes a lot of talented ingredients and a little fairy dust to make comedy work, so it will all depend on who surrounds Bergen on the set, as well as the writing and direction.
We’ll see beginning in the Fall how this one works out.
