It was 35 years ago tonight.
My buddy Dave and I were big into funk, R & B and Motown, and we were fans of Michael Jackson based on his work with the J5, a very funky “Off The Wall” album, and his monster single from Thriller, “Billy Jean:, released in January of that year.
The special would feature live performances from many of the Motown legends, and there was some buzz about how things might go between Diana Ross and her former Supremes cohorts. The real buzz, however, was around the the heavily-promoted performance by Michael Jackson, whose mega-stardom was on the rise.
Dave and I had the TV cranked for all of the performances, but we turned it up to 11 for MJ, and leaned in, because there had been word that he was going to reveal a new move he’d added to his already impressive arsenal.
That move was “The Moonwalk”, and when he did it, my buddy and I started jumping up and down like the Jets had just scored in OT to win Game 7. Blew. Our. Minds.
I was lucky enough to see him do it – and all of his other moves – in-person just over a year later when he and his J5 brothers brought the Victory Tour to Montreal’s Olympic Stadium.
