Tonight, I’m not going to bed. I’ll be up all night. Why would I do that in the middle of the week? Because, on January 4 New Japan Pro Wrestling presents Wrestle Kingdom 12 and the co-main event on the card is Winnipeg’s own Chris Jericho vs. Winnipeg’s own Kenny Omega in a match being billed as Alpha vs Omega.
If you’re wondering why this show is in the middle of the week, you probably aren’t alone. Wrestle Kingdom in NJPW’s biggest show of the year. Consider it like their Wrestlemania. It is always held at the Tokyo Dome and is the one show of the year that they put on at that venue. It is ALWAYS held on January 4, regardless of what day of the week that falls on. It’s basically a holiday in Japan for wrestling fans.
Not only will two of Winnipeg’s favourite sons go head-to-head on international soil, there are also going to be some amazing matches from people you’ve never heard of before now. The main guy on the poster below with the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on his shoulder is ‘The Rainmaker’ Kazuchika Okada. He is undoubtedly the best pro wrestler on the planet right now and he is currently the longest reigning champion of all-time and on the longest reign of all time. His opponent is the guy with the red gleam above his eye, Tetsuya Naito. He is the leader of the faction known as Los Ingobernables de Japon and another one of the Top 5 wrestlers on the planet. The guy just below Okada is Hiroshi Tanahashi. Think of him as NJPW’s John Cena. He is one of their biggest stars and yet another one of the Top 5 wrestlers on the planet. Add in Kenny Omega who you see at the bottom of the poster and you have four of the Top 5 best wrestlers in the world right now.
The show will start at 1:30 am in Winnipeg and the way to watch it is to subscribe to NJPW World. It’s cost is 999 YEN, which works out to $11.15 Canadian and you get it for the month and therefore you will get a few other shows during that time period. It is available as an app on all Apple/Android devices and on Amazon Fire TV. You can also get it on your computer.

Another cool thing about the event is that they offer ENGLISH COMMENTARY. It’s done by Kevin Kelly and yet another WINNIPEGGER, Don Callis (or Cyrus as you may know him). How cool is that? THREE Winnipeggers representing the city at this event.
If I’ve interested you at all in the event, here’s a preview to the entire show to catch you up on who’s who, etc. Enjoy the show tonight because if history has taught us anything, it’s that January 4 at the Tokyo Dome guarantees you some amazing wrestling.
