I think I can speak for all of us when I say…Well, this is terrifying.
The neurotoxin is called BMAA (beta-Methylamino-L-alanine), and is believed to contribute to neuro-degenerative disorders. It has been found in the increasingly alarming blooms of algae affecting lake Winnipeg, much of which your kids swallow every time they go swimming in the lake.
Scientists are studying the Manitoba blooms to find out how much ingestion is required to make it dangerous, and how much we much be ingesting via our consumption of commercial fish.
