Not *that* Robbie the Robot that you used to see chatting it up with Uncle Bob; that was a plywood box.
This is THE Robbie the Robot from the camp sci-fi movie “Forbidden Planet” . This is also the one movie prop that also became a “working” prop, subsequently appearing in other movies and TV shows including “Lost in Space” and “The Adams Family”.
Now…Robbie (who, based on the photo, has been hanging out with the other famous robots in some sort of robot retirement community) could be yours. He’s going up for auction next week.
According to the Digital Trends story, “Robby the Robot will be one of the centrepieces of the upcoming “Out of this World” auction hosted by Bonhams. The seven-foot tall robot is operational and is expected to sell for somewhere in range of seven figures when it goes to auction on November 21. Adding to its potential value is the fact that Robby the Robot was, at the time of its construction, one of the most expensive sci-fi props ever built. Made mostly of plastic and featuring working electronics which could be controlled remotely or via the person inside the suit, the prop cost Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer around $100,000.”
