Autism spectrum disorder currently affects 1 in 68 children in Canada. The prevalence of ASD has increased over 100% in the last 10 years and it is now the fastest growing and most commonly diagnosed neurological disorder in Canada.
That’s why it’s so important to have the conversation about the disorder. Since it is a spectrum disorder, it is very difficult to truly grasp ‘what’ Autism is. It affects all people differently. However, the more we, as a society, are exposed to people who are affected by ASD, the more we will understand the disorder.
Meet Chase. He’s 16 years old and he suffers from ASD. His dad has been posting videos to YouTube to try to best convey how the disorder affects Chase and how he interprets the world around him. Personally, I learned more about ASD by watching this video, than I’ve learned in my entire life before this. And, to be honest, it really brightened my day. Seeing a dad interact with his son like this is a pleasure to experience. THIS is what LOVE is. THIS is what UNDERSTANDING is. THIS is what we should ALL strive to be as people: loving, compassionate, understanding.
