Anyone who knows a thing about me will confirm my love for Lawrence Gowan. He’s a true Canadian treasure.
I remember first hearing his music on the show Degrassi High. The songs ‘Moonlight Desires’ and ‘Burning Torches of Hope’ were featured in the episode ‘Just Friends’ where the twins (Heather and Erica) decide to have a house party. Wheels ends up making out with Heather on the porch to the soothing sounds of Gowan. His music was again used as the soundtrack of 1980’s Canadian house parties on the episode ‘Pa-arty!’. This time Lucy decided to throw a house party and Joey, Snake and Wheels get caught drinking underage. Gowan’s song ‘Cosmetics’ is used in the episode. Finally, in what is in my opinion the crowning acheivement of Canadian television, Gowan provided the soundtrack to Joey Jeremiah and Tessa Campanelli losing their virginity in the made-for-TV movie ‘Degrassi: School’s Out’. Trust me when I say that NOTHING is hotter than a sex scene set to the soothing sounds of ‘Moonlight Desires’.
Anyways, enough about the past. In case you don’t know, Gowan has been fronting the band Styx since 1999. Originally, he opened for the band in Montreal in 1997 and caught the attention of longtime Styx member Tommy Shaw. In 1999, Shaw asked him to front the band for their 53 date tour, replacing singer Dennis DeYoung. The rest is history and Gowan has been the lead singer of the band ever since. They even perform his song ‘A Criminal Mind’ at every show. Seeing them live several years ago at Shaw Park was easily one of my Top 10 concerts of all-time. Nothing says rock and roll like Styx coming onto the stage from the back with their 80’s hair blowing in the wind. Gowan, rocking a bright red Mountie jacket, walks to the front of the stage and spins his keyboard around and kicks into ‘Blue Collar Man’. Mesmerizing!
So, when I say Styx is back and Gowan is back, you must know that they never really went anywhere. They are still rocking all over the world. But they do have a new song called ‘Gone Gone Gone’. It’s the first single from their upcoming album ‘The Mission’ due out June 16. It’s the first all-new, original Styx album in 14 years! Check it out!
As an aside, I’m really enjoying Gowan’s hair. I mean, really.
