Those t-shirts and hoodies you’re seeing on Facebook are not official Hip merch, and the proceeds don’t go to Gord’s charity.
It probably shouldn’t surprise us at this point that anything we see is a knock-off of some sort, and not only is this the case again, but this example is one of the most cynical.
If at some point, you’ve clicked on a Tragically Hip-related Facebook link, or mentioned the band in your feed, Facebook algorithms have taken note, and you will have been seeing “sponsored posts” urging you to buy Hip T’s and hoodies, with proceeds going to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research.
Like many a cynical ploy, this one plays on our sympathy for Gord’s personal plight, and on the collective national emotion generated by the band’s courageous tour last summer.
Guitarist Rob Baker is warning fans that the band isn’t selling merch on Facebook-sponsored links, and that “Hip Store” you’re redirected to has no connection to the band.
