WestJet announced today that it is going to be getting into the discount airline biz, which begs some thought…
Never mind the issues we’ve been hearing about in the headlines recently about full-fare airlines (including an incident where an Air Canada plane lost a wheel during take-off), there have been years of scary headlines about the discount airline that operates out of Grand Forks, and some head scratchers about New Leaf Airlines right here in Manitoba.
They’ve given a lot of white knuckle fliers reason to grip those arm rests just a little tighter, but they’ve also got everyone else regarding air travel with more trepidation than before.
Add to that the extra charges we have to pay, the poor or non-existent food that you get (or don’t) on a typical flight, the boarding that is like a cattle call, the ever more invasive security, etc.
So my question is…do we really want a discount airline, or would we prefer to pay the current prices – or even slightly more – for a better overall travel experience?
