I remember a time when getting a personalised license plate was the “thing” to do. For an extra $75 dollars you could get a plate with something “witty” that people had to figure out or just your name. Now, if I had the last name “Grabher” I’m not sure if I’d want that on my vehicle, but for the past 25 years Lorne has had that plate which was his father’s who passed away in the 90’s. Last December, he received a letter telling him the plate would be cancelled in January because the public cannot be expected to know it is his last name and “can misinterpret it as a socially unacceptable slogan.”
Lorne Grabher is of German heritage. Could it be a Trump thing? The president did say he wanted to “grab her” in reference to a woman. There are approximately 3,100 words that the provincial government has deemed unacceptable on licence plates. Words are banned for religious reasons, for being sexual, or for being in poor taste. In some cases a specific reason was never inputted into the system.
Some of the words that can’t be on licence plates include:
As far as Grabher getting his name back on his vehicle, the department has offered to print alternative wording or to reimburse Grabher for the cost of the remaining life of the plate. Talking names, do you know what longest last name is? Check this out;

Yep, that’s one person’s full name. Includes the names of those helped by a charity set up by Dawn McManus in memory of her son. The Hartlepool, U.K. resident changed her name to the above to honour them.
