How do you explain International Women’s Day to your child? To your daughter(s)? Do you tell them that no matter how hard woman have tried over the years we can still be treated as unequal in many facets of society? Do you tell them that no matter how strong they are and independent they are they will likely face sexist remarks in the workplace or walking down the street…or online…or anywhere at any time? How do you tell them this without breaking down into tears, knowing that this will happen at one time or another? I have had horrible sexist things said to me many times, often as a joke, because for some reason guys think strong women can ‘handle it’. Well guess what….no we can’t. I am an optimist. I believe in good. And I love and know so many incredible men that honour and respect women. Talk to your kids, talk to your girls. make them strong. Fill them with knowledge. Encourage them. Encourage them to build other women up…..never tear each other down. Men and women are better and stronger together as equals. A lofty goal? Maybe, but we can only keep trying!
